Speeding at 86 MPH or More Constitutes Reckless Driving

In Washington County, Virginia, Interstate 81 stretches for almost 25 miles from Smyth County to the City of Bristol. Dozens of speeding tickets are issued every day in Washington County to interstate drivers by the Virginia State Police and the local sheriff’s department. The vast majority of those tickets are issued for speeds of 86 miles per hour and over. Many are issued to out-of-state drivers.

Few are aware at the time that a ticket for going 86 mph or more is a ticket for reckless driving. In Virginia, reckless driving is a crime, not a mere traffic offense. Unlike a traffic infraction, a reckless driving conviction creates a permanent criminal record. And the potential penalties are harsh: a fine up to $2500, loss of license for up to 6 months, 6 demerit points added to the driving record, and even the possibility of up to 12 months in jail!

Speeding tickets, including those for reckless driving, are tried in the Washington County General District Court in the county courthouse. The courthouse is located at:

Washington County General District Court
191 East Main Street
Abingdon, VA 24210

The Law Offices of Mark T. Hurt is located in a historic two-story brick house just up the

same street – a short walking distance from the courthouse:

I frequently appear in traffic court at Washington County District

Court nearly every week. I am very familiar with the two judges who preside over that court — the Honorable Eric Thiesson and the Honorable Blake McKinney. More importantly, I am familiar with the factors that those two judges use in how they typically decide speeding and reckless driving cases. I know and talk with the traffic prosecutor – Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Ginger Largen, and am familiar with individual state troopers and police that issue the tickets like the one that you received. For the vast majority of speeding and even reckless driving tickets, we have been successful in getting the ticket reduced to a lesser charge, or even dismissed.

If you were issued a traffic ticket – speeding or reckless driving — in Washington County, get help from an effective and experienced local attorney. Give me a call at 276-623-0808 for a free consultation as to how I might help you to get your charge reduced or dismissed.

I know from first-hand experience that getting a speeding or reckless driving ticket and the uncertainty it creates can cause tremendous stress. Relieve your anxiety. Take the first step and call now.

Out-of-State drivers: Not only can we help you, we can usually appear in court for you without the need for you to come to Virginia. We have helped many drivers from New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida and other states get their tickets reduced or dismissed.
