Dating back to 1771, Gate City serves as the county seat of Scott County. Gate City was originally known as Winfield in honor of General Winfield Scott, a hero of the War of 1812 (for whom the county is named). Subsequently, in 1817, the town was renamed Estillville in honor of local judge Benjamin Estill, who helped with the formation of Scott County. In 1886 the town was renamed Gate City based upon the proximity to the Big Moccasin Gap (called the “Gate to the West), and the town itself was incorporated six years later.
With a long and colorful history, as personal injury attorneys for Gate City we are proud to provide tenacious representation to area residents who are injured by the negligence and wrongful acts of others, as well as to the families who have lost a loved due to the fault of someone else.
Take Advantage of a Free Consultation to Learn About Your Options
If you have been injured or lost a loved one, we invite you to call our firm today for a free case evaluation, and to learn about your legal options for seeking compensation and how we can help you if we are retained to serve as your personal injury attorneys.
Contingency Fee Representation and Advancement of Litigation Costs
We represent clients on a contingency fee basis, meaning that there is no fee for us unless we are successful in obtaining compensation for you. We also advance all of the costs needed in litigation, including court costs, expert fees, deposition costs, and the costs for other matters, which sometimes can be substantial. Since we advance these costs as they are incurred, you and your family will not need to be burdened with paying such costs while your case is ongoing (these costs are normally paid from settlement or jury awards).
A Personal Injury Attorney You Can Trust
At the Law Offices of Mark T. Hurt, you will be treated as a VIP – not a file. We pride ourselves in providing custom legal services – not “assembly-line” representation handled primarily through junior staff.
When you become a client at our firm, you will be working directly with attorney Mark T. Hurt. Our firm has over 25 years of experience in injury law, and we strive to provide legal excellence in every case regardless of the case size.
We understands the physical, financial, and emotional toll that comes with getting injured. We know that injuries often affect a whole family, which is why we will work relentlessly in getting you the full compensation that you deserve, and making sure that we use our full efforts in seeking to hold accountable all those who are responsible.
Our Representation in Wrongful Death Cases
Please accept our sincere condolences if your family has lost a loved one due to the negligence or wrongful actions of someone else. As wrongful death lawyers serving Gate City, Scott County, and the surrounding counties, we are tireless in pursuing the full measure of compensation available under the law. In addition to medical and other expenses incurred, normally a family dependent upon a breadwinner will be entitled to the present value of lost future wages that would otherwise have been earned by the deceased person, as well as other compensatory damages to account for their emotional loss. When we meet with you, we can explain the full damages that may be applicable for your case, as well as any limitations on damages that may apply.
Because lost wages and other compensation can be significant, it is critical in these cases to hire an experienced wrongful death lawyer familiar with how to prove the full value of lost wages and other compensation to a jury so that an appropriate award can be made if the case goes to trial.
Contact Our Firm Before Releasing Information to Insurance Companies
Before contacting an insurance agent to discuss your accident/injury, we suggest calling us for a free consultation to discuss your options.
We note that insurance companies (especially those for “at-fault” drivers) frequently will contact car crash victims as soon as possible after a crash (sometimes within hours) to obtain a statement about injuries and the cause of the accident. Please note that you are under no legal obligation to give any kind of a statement about your injuries or accident at that time.
Insurance companies will often use whatever evidence they can against you to deny your claim; that’s why it is important to contact the Law Offices of Mark T. Hurt before you give any information that could hurt your claim. We can then represent you in speaking with any insurance companies that may be involved.

“Mark took over my car accident case from another attorney that I fired. Mark worked hard on the case for several months to get ready for trial. Shortly before trial he got a settlement that was six times more than the offer my first lawyer tried to get me to take.”
